How Does a Fire Extinguisher Work?
A fire extinguisher is a vital safety device designed to suppress or extinguish small fires before they spread. It works by removing one or more elements of the fire triangle:
Fire Triangle: Fuel + Oxygen + Heat = Fire
By disrupting one of these elements, a fire extinguisher effectively puts out the fire.
A. Parts of a Fire Extinguisher
- Cylinder – Holds the extinguishing agent.
- Nozzle or Hose – Directs the agent onto the fire.
- Safety Pin & Seal – Prevents accidental discharge.
- Pressure Gauge – Indicates if the extinguisher is charged and ready.
- Handle & Lever – Used to activate the extinguisher.
B. How It Works (PASS Method)
To operate a fire extinguisher, use the PASS technique:
- Pull the pin – Break the tamper seal and remove the safety pin.
- Aim at the base of the fire – Direct the nozzle toward the source of the flames, not the top.
- Squeeze the handle – Release the extinguishing agent.
- Sweep side to side – Cover the fire area evenly until the flames are out.
