How Does a Fire Extinguisher Work?

Regular maintenance of your fire extinguisher ensures it’s ready when you need it most. Learn why servicing is essential and how often it should be done.

How Does a Fire Extinguisher Work?

A fire extinguisher is a vital safety device designed to suppress or extinguish small fires before they spread. It works by removing one or more elements of the fire triangle:

Fire Triangle: Fuel + Oxygen + Heat = Fire

By disrupting one of these elements, a fire extinguisher effectively puts out the fire.

A. Parts of a Fire Extinguisher

  • Cylinder – Holds the extinguishing agent.
  • Nozzle or Hose – Directs the agent onto the fire.
  • Safety Pin & Seal – Prevents accidental discharge.
  • Pressure Gauge – Indicates if the extinguisher is charged and ready.
  • Handle & Lever – Used to activate the extinguisher.

B. How It Works (PASS Method)

To operate a fire extinguisher, use the PASS technique:

  1. Pull the pin – Break the tamper seal and remove the safety pin.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire – Direct the nozzle toward the source of the flames, not the top.
  3. Squeeze the handle – Release the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep side to side – Cover the fire area evenly until the flames are out.
